Resizing images for the web

Photos straight from a phone or camera are often 4,000 pixels wide and several megabytes in size, far larger than any website needs. Oversized images are one of the most common reasons pages load slowly. This tool resizes JPEG, PNG and WebP images to exact pixel dimensions, keeps the aspect ratio if you want it to, and can resize several files at once.

Sizes that work well

Full-width banner images: about 1,600 to 2,000 pixels wide.
Images inside an article: around 1,200 pixels wide, which still looks sharp on high-resolution screens.
Social sharing images: 1,200 by 630 pixels.
Thumbnails: 300 to 400 pixels wide.

Choosing a format

JPEG for photos. A quality setting of about 75 to 85 is usually indistinguishable from the original.
PNG for screenshots, logos and anything that needs transparency or sharp edges.
WebP for both. It is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at similar quality, and all current browsers support it.

Tips

Never enlarge. Making a small image bigger only adds blur.
Keep the aspect ratio unless you are cropping on purpose; stretched images look wrong straight away.
