Before you merge

Order the files. Number the file names, such as 01-contract.pdf and 02-appendix.pdf, so the order is obvious.
Check for passwords. Password-protected PDFs usually need to be unlocked by their owner first.
Watch the size. Merged scans can exceed email limits, which are often around 20 to 25 MB, so compress large scans first.

What can change in a merged file

Form fields and signatures. Fillable fields with the same name can clash, and digital signatures are usually invalidated when a signed file is combined with others. Merge first and sign afterwards, or send signed documents separately.
Bookmarks and links inside the original files may not carry over.
Page sizes. Combining A4 and Letter pages works, but printers may scale them differently.

Privacy

Contracts, bank statements and ID scans contain personal data. Use a tool you trust for sensitive documents, delete copies you no longer need, and consider whether the recipient really needs every page.
