What is an HTTP Referrer Header?
Every time you click a link, your browser automatically sends an HTTP Referer header to the destination website. This header reveals the exact URL you came from. That can be a blog post, an internal document, a private dashboard, or an affiliate campaign. The destination website logs this data and can use it to identify you.

Key terms explained
- Referer
- The HTTP request header that carries the full URL of the page a visitor arrived from. The single "r" is a 1996 typo that was kept so existing sites would not break. See the MDN reference for the Referer header.
- Referrer-Policy
- The response header that tells a browser how much referrer data it may send. The value
no-referrersuppresses it completely, as defined by the W3C Referrer Policy recommendation. - Dereferer
- A service that opens a destination URL with the source removed. That is exactly what the free dereferer tool on this site does, one link at a time.
- Short link
- A compact version of a long URL that still redirects anonymously. Short links are useful when a URL has to fit inside a message, a post or a printed page.
Our own testing shows the same result every time. We open each generated link and watch the network panel, and no Referer header reaches the destination. The value is removed on the server, so the outcome never depends on the privacy settings of whoever clicks.
On the other hand, stripping the referrer is not the same as full anonymity. The destination still sees your IP address and browser. A few sites also reject traffic that arrives with no referrer, because they use that header for fraud checks.

Why does referrer privacy matter?
Internal documents, staging servers and admin panels should never appear in third-party access logs. With the referrer removed, the destination only sees a direct visit and cannot reconstruct the page you came from.
Stop competitors from seeing which affiliate networks you use or which products you promote. Clean links also look shorter and more trustworthy when you share them in a newsletter or a post.
Prevent your traffic sources from showing up in competitor analytics tools and third-party tracking platforms. Your referral strategy stays private, while your own analytics still records the visit you care about.
Protect the people who click your links. The destination cannot profile them based on where they came from. This matters most for forums, support tickets and private communities.
