What is a passkey?

A passkey is a cryptographic key pair generated on your device that replaces a password. To sign in, you approve with your fingerprint, face scan, or device PIN — the private key never leaves your device, so there's nothing to steal in a data breach or phishing attack.

Are passkeys safer than passwords?

Yes. Passkeys are phishing-resistant by design — they only work on the exact website they were created for, so a fake lookalike site can't trick you into handing one over the way it could with a typed password.

What happens if I lose my device?

Passkeys created through Apple, Google, or Microsoft sync across your other devices via iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or Windows Hello respectively, so a lost device isn't a lost account as long as you're signed into the sync service elsewhere.

Do I still need a password manager?

Yes, for now. Most websites still don't support passkeys, so a password manager remains the best way to handle strong, unique passwords for everything else while passkey adoption grows.
