How Referrer Leakage Actually Works
Every time you click a link, your browser can send an HTTP header called Referer (yes, that's the historical misspelling that stuck) to the destination site. That header contains the full URL of the page you clicked from — including any query parameters, internal tool names, or campaign tags baked into it. A standard shortener redirects your click but leaves this header intact, so the destination site still learns exactly where the click originated, even though the URL itself got shorter.
A Real Example
Say you're sharing a link from an internal dashboard at https://internal.example.com/campaigns/q3-launch?src=partner-x. Shorten that with a standard tool, and anyone who clicks it still sends that full internal URL — partner name, campaign code, and all — to whatever site the link points to. A no-referrer shortener redirects through an intermediate page first, so the destination only ever sees that a click happened, not where it came from.
Who Actually Needs This
This matters most for a few specific situations: sharing links in a Discord or Slack community where you don't want the destination site correlating clicks back to your server, posting affiliate links without revealing your traffic source to competitors, and internal teams sharing dashboard or tool links externally without exposing their infrastructure naming.
What Makes a No-Referrer URL Shortener Different?
Standard URL shorteners create shorter links but still pass the Referer header — revealing which page sent the click. Our No-Referrer URL Shortener strips this on every single redirect.
