Frequently Asked Questions

What does the word counter measure?
The word counter tracks word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time. These metrics update in real time as you type or paste text into the tool.
Does the word counter work with text in languages other than English?
Yes. The counter works with any Latin-script language and correctly counts words separated by spaces. For languages like Chinese, Japanese, or Thai that do not use spaces between words, the counter measures characters rather than words.
How are words counted?
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace and filtering out empty strings. Hyphenated words (e.g. "well-known") count as one word. Numbers count as words.
How is reading time calculated?
Based on the average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute (from a 2019 study published in the Journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology). Adjust for your audience — technical content is slower.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is the percentage of times a specific word appears in your text relative to the total word count. For SEO, a natural density of 1-2% for your target keyword is generally recommended.

Why word and character counts matter

Most places you write have a limit: a meta description, a social post, an essay, an app store listing. This counter shows words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time as you type, and lets you set targets for common platforms, so you can trim text before you paste it in.

Useful limits to know

  • Page title: roughly 50 to 60 characters before Google cuts it off in search results.
  • Meta description: around 150 to 160 characters.
  • X (Twitter): 280 characters for standard accounts.
  • LinkedIn post: up to 3,000 characters, with only the first few lines shown before "see more".
  • Reading time: people read about 200 to 250 words a minute, so a 1,000-word article takes four to five minutes.

Why counts differ between tools

  • Spaces. Some limits count characters with spaces and some without, so check which one applies.
  • Emoji and some symbols count as two characters on some platforms.
  • Hyphenated words and numbers are counted differently by different tools, so totals can differ by a few words from Word or Google Docs.

Writing to a limit

Put the main point first, then cut filler such as "really", "very" and "in order to". Reading the text aloud once also helps: any sentence you stumble over is usually one worth shortening.
