You click a download button on a torrent site and see two options: a magnet link and a .torrent file. Both start the same download — but they work in completely different ways. Here is what each one is and when to use which.
What Is a Torrent File?
A .torrent file is a small file (usually a few kilobytes) that contains metadata about the download. It includes: the names and sizes of all files in the torrent, a list of trackers (servers that coordinate the download), and cryptographic hashes to verify file integrity.
When you open a .torrent file in your BitTorrent client (qBittorrent, uTorrent, Deluge), the client reads the metadata and begins connecting to trackers and peers to download the actual files.
What Is a Magnet Link?
A magnet link is a URL that contains only the info hash of the torrent — a unique identifier generated from the torrent metadata. Instead of downloading a .torrent file first, your client uses the info hash to find peers directly through DHT (Distributed Hash Table), a decentralised peer discovery system.
A magnet link looks like: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:abc123...&dn=filename
Key Differences
- File required — Torrent files must be downloaded first. Magnet links need nothing — just click and go.
- Trackers — Torrent files can list specific trackers. Magnet links use DHT, which is decentralised and harder to block.
- Privacy — Magnet links leave no .torrent file on your device. This is slightly more private.
- Initial speed — Torrent files connect to trackers immediately. Magnet links may take longer to find initial peers through DHT.
- Availability — Magnet links work even if the original torrent site is down. Torrent files become useless if the tracker goes offline (unless the .torrent file lists backup trackers).
Which Should You Use?
Use magnet links when you want instant clicks without downloading a file first, and when the torrent has many seeders. Use .torrent files when you need immediate fast connections to specific trackers, or when you want to archive the torrent for future use.
How to Convert Between Them
