What Happened to ExtraTorrent?
ExtraTorrent was one of the largest public torrent indexers in the world, operating from 2006 until May 2017 when it shut down permanently. At its peak it hosted millions of torrents and received hundreds of millions of visits per month. Unlike The Pirate Bay, ExtraTorrent chose to close voluntarily rather than continue under increasing legal pressure. The shutdown notice read simply: "ExtraTorrent is closed indefinitely" — no mirrors or backups were announced by the original operators.
ExtraTorrent Mirror and Clone Sites
After ExtraTorrent shut down, numerous unofficial mirror and clone sites appeared claiming to carry its index. These were created by third parties who had crawled or archived portions of the original database. They vary considerably in quality, completeness, and safety:
- Some are genuine database mirrors with most of ExtraTorrent's original torrents still searchable.
- Others are spam sites using the ET name to attract traffic with little actual content.
- Most carry aggressive pop-under advertising with associated malware risks.
Because the original site is gone, no "official" proxy exists — any site claiming to be one is independently operated and unaffiliated with the original team.
Finding Torrents Without ExtraTorrent
The content ExtraTorrent indexed is generally available through other public torrent sites that are still operating. Major alternatives:
- The Pirate Bay — the longest-running major public torrent index, still operating with a large catalog.
- 1337x — well-organized with active community curation and quality verification.
- Nyaa.si — the go-to indexer for anime and Asian media torrents.
- Torrent Galaxy — a general-purpose indexer that grew significantly after major sites closed.
Working With Torrent Files and Magnet Links
The Anonymiz torrent toolkit helps with every step of working with torrents found on any indexer:
- Magnet to Torrent — fetch metadata from the BitTorrent network and download a .torrent file.
- Torrent to Magnet — extract the info hash from a .torrent file and build a shareable magnet link.
- Torrent Editor — inspect and edit torrent metadata including tracker lists.
- Torrent Health Checker — check seeder and leecher counts before downloading.
Stay Safe When Using Torrent Sites
Piracy sites carry elevated malware risk through pop-under ad networks. Use an ad blocker, keep your browser updated, and verify your VPN is working with the Anonymiz WebRTC leak test before browsing.

We Checked: Is There an Active ExtraTorrent Mirror Right Now?
As of July 2026, no. We monitor for live ExtraTorrent mirror domains the same way we track Pirate Bay and Movierulz mirrors, and unlike those two, we currently find zero verified, working ExtraTorrent mirrors. This isn't a gap in our data — it reflects that ExtraTorrent's community largely dispersed to other trackers after the 2017 shutdown, rather than rebuilding a mirror network the way Pirate Bay's did.
Be especially cautious of any site claiming to be a "working ExtraTorrent proxy" in 2026. Defunct torrent sites are common targets for scam and malware operators who register lookalike domains specifically to catch searches like this one — since there's no real site behind the name anymore, anything you find is either unrelated or actively malicious.
